Essentials Oils 101

Essential oils have become more and more popular, and there’s a good chance that you may have a few of your own bottles and maybe a diffuser or two. There’s a lot of information out there, and it can be difficult to remember it all. Whether you’re a newbie or a veteran with oils, read on to get the essentials of essential oils.

What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are natural compounds extracted from plants and can be found in the roots, stems, leaves, flowers, or fruits. Not all plants produce essential oils. EO’s hydrophobic liquid that are obtained through distillation (via steam and/or water) or mechanical methods, such as cold pressing. The way the oils are made is important; essential oils that are produced through a chemical process are not considered true essential oils.

Each plant part has a distinct smell, or “essence” that is captured in the oil. Each individual one can provide various therapeutic uses.  Essential oils are very concentrated and more potent than dried herbs, so it’s important to remember to dilute with a carrier oil before using topically.

Essential oils have been used throughout history in many cultures because of their powerful medicinal and therapeutic benefits. In face the true birthplace of essentials oils is in Ancient Egypt, and distillation pots have been found dating all the way back to 3500 B.C. China and India were exploring herbs and aromatic plants too around that same time; essential oils would eventually become an integral part of the Indian Ayurvedic medical system

How to use Essential Oils?

Diffusers are the easiest and simplest ways to incorporate essential oils into your life. I run mine every single day! Not only is it a great, natural option for an air freshener, but they also help to clean your air, can help energize, uplift your mood, help you sleep, and so much more! Plus they are super easy to use. You fill it with water, put a few drops of your favorite oil, turn on, and you’re good to go!

Essential oil rollers are a simple way to get the benefits of essential oils topically. You can buy premade ones, or make your own easily. A good rule of thumb is to mix 15-30 drops of essential oil(s) for a 10mL bottle. There are several carrier oils that are great options to use.
